  6. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (March 6, 1995) -- Netscape Communications Corporation
  7. today announced Netscape Navigatorª 1.1, a significantly enhanced version of
  8. its popular network navigator that gives users access to richer content and new
  9. applications on the Internet. The beta version of Netscape Navigator 1.1 is
  10. available immediately for downloading for educational and non-profit use and
  11. for evaluation by commercial users.

  13. The 1.1 version builds on the success of the original Netscape Navigator, which
  14. already accounts for more than 75 percent of browser traffic on the Internet,
  15. according to statistics from popular Web sites. Netscape Navigator 1.1 includes
  16. sophisticated new features such as the Netscape Client Application Programming
  17. Interface (NCAPI) for easy integration with third party applications, advanced
  18. layout capabilities for more visually compelling pages, dynamic document
  19. updating for changing information, and enhanced security features.

  21. "Netscape Navigator 1.1 is more than an update to the original: it is a
  22. significant new offering that lets users experience an even richer online
  23. environment," said Marc Andreessen, vice president of technology at Netscape
  24. Communications. "Our first version of Netscape Navigator captured the attention
  25. of users through its ease of use, integrated security and smooth performance
  26. over modem lines. By incorporating advanced features and unparalleled
  27. flexibility, Netscape Navigator 1.1 dramatically expands the online universe
  28. and lets users experience the next level in media-rich communications and
  29. commerce on the Net."

  31. The 1.1 version of Netscape Navigator now available on the Internet is a public
  32. beta version, enabling users to provide feedback on the software's features and
  33. functionality across a wide range of computing platforms. As with the 1.0
  34. release, Netscape will place the final version of Netscape Navigator 1.1 -- due
  35. out in April -- on the Internet for free downloading by students and staff in
  36. education and non-profit organizations, and for free evaluation by individuals
  37. and commercial organizations.

  39. Available for all popular desktop environments, Netscape Navigator is a
  40. powerful commercial navigator for the Internet, offering high-performance and
  41. secure point-and-click network navigation. It is optimized to run smoothly over
  42. 14.4 kilobit/second modems as well as higher bandwidth lines, delivering
  43. performance up to ten times that of other network browsers. Netscape Navigator
  44. provides a common feature set and graphical user interface across computers
  45. running the Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, or X Window System operating
  46. environments. The 1.1 release adds support for two new emerging platforms:
  47. 32-bit MS Windows (WindowsNT and Windows95) and Macintosh PowerPC platforms.

  49. Netscape Navigator 1.1's new capabilities include:
  50.  
  51.    * Advanced layout capabilities using HTML 3.0 tables and graphical
  52.      backdrops. These capabilities allow more sophisticated page presentation,
  53.      including multiple text columns and flexible image placement.
  54.    * NCAPI, providing sophisticated remote control and inter-application
  55.      communication capabilities via OLE/DDE on Windows, AppleEvents on
  56.      Macintosh, and X Events on UNIX. For example, third party applications
  57.      such as a 3D viewer or rich document viewer can be tightly integrated with
  58.      Netscape Navigator to allow more sophisticated media types to be used
  59.      directly within the navigator.
  60.    * Dynamic document updating, which enables Netscape Navigator to display
  61.      continuously or regularly updated information -- such as stock quotes,
  62.      weather maps, and other dynamic data.
  63.    * Additional security options, including an enhanced US-only version with
  64.      non-exportable encryption technology; and secure Usenet news/conferencing
  65.      capabilities based on the application-independent Secure Sockets Layer
  66.      (SSL) protocol. This protocol is compatible with Netscape's recently
  67.      published SSL source code reference implementation called SSLRef, which
  68.      has been licensed by more than 100 organizations and individuals. SSLRef
  69.      is available on the Internet for non-commercial use and commercial
  70.      evaluation and licensing to encourage its incorporation in a variety of
  71.      networked applications.
  72.    * Enhanced Usenet news interface, including hierarchical newsgroup browsing
  73.      and searching, optimizations for low-bandwidth connections, and
  74.      transparent Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) message handling
  75.      for multimedia and hypermedia news postings.

  77. Netscape Navigator 1.1, available for Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and X
  78. Window System environments, can be obtained via anonymous FTP from
  79. ftp.netscape.com.

  81. Individuals who download the software do so for evaluation use only. Commercial
  82. users can purchase supported, licensed copies of Netscape Navigator directly
  83. from Netscape Communications. Pricing starts at $39 per user, which includes a
  84. 90-day warranty and customer support. Users who have purchased Netscape
  85. Navigator 1.0 are automatically licensed for full use of the 1.1 update. Volume
  86. discounts are available for multiple user licenses.
